The iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 now include a battery percentage meter. This indicator sits next to the batter indicator on the top status bar.

To activate or deactivate the percentage meter on your iPhone go to Settings -> General -> Usage. At the top of the 'Usage' page turn the 'Battery Percentage' to 'ON' or 'OFF' as required.
